Senator Marco Rubio was recently asked (gotcha-style) by GQ how old he believed the earth was. As with any Bible student, I have given this issue  lots of thought over the years.  The purpose of the question is to embarrass the Bible Believer because it is assumed that the Biblical answer is roughly “6,000 years”. That makes the Believer look idiotic because frankly there is ample proof the earth is FAR older – as in billions of years old. I realize that many Christian denominations and all Jewish ones that I know of teach this, and believe the Bible backs them up. Even a man I have ALL the respect in the world for, Dennis Prager, just last week tried to explain away the “6 days”. But I am here to tell ya, they are wrong.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

The more you learn about the Bible the more you learn how SIMPLE God’s Word is. The Scriptural fact is that God didn’t create the earth “without form and void”. Even in English this makes sense. When something is created it is given “form” by definition. But always remember the original language you are dealing with. The Hebrew makes it clear. You cannot just proceed from verse 1 to verse 2 as if it is one thought; IE immediately followed. The fact is there is a “gap” of time between verses 1 and 2. A LOT of time. Like Billions of years of time. The word to focus in on is the one translated as “without form”; “tohuw”. This same word, in the same context, is found in Isaiah 45:18 –

For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.

“vain” = “tohuw”.  Let that sink in. God is saying the earth was NOT created “tohuw”. But Genesis says it WAS created that way right?? In the English and by the tradition of man, yes. But the Bible doesn’t say that! In fact, God is adamant that He created the earth TO BE INHABITED.  Meaning no other “creation” (IE the 6 days of Genesis 1) needed! So that means that something happened after He created the earth billions of years ago – something BIG to induce the state of “tohuw”. Science and the Bible do NOT conflict! More to come…
