Time for my annual game of “play General Manager of an NFL team”. I’m sure nobody cares about my opinions on this topic, I do it more to get it “on the record” so I can either gloat or laugh at myself in the future. It is my hobby so shut up! What follows is a position by position ranking (save Offensive Line which I have no clue how to judge) based on how I would draft them if I were running the Draft room next week. Plus my patented “busts and bargains” at the end. Enjoy?

QB
1. Geno Smith, West Virginia
2. E.J. Manuel, Florida St.

13. Collin Klein, Kansas St.
14. Jordan Rodgers, Vanderbilt
15. Alex Carder, Western Michigan
Smith and Manuel may be the only starters in this class. Barkley is kind of like Andy Dalton 2 years ago, has the mental chops but the physical seems to be lacking. Nassib I think will be very over-drafted , he is a career backup to me. Matt Scott is the wild card, has the arm and legs to make a big impact once he learns the position more. Klein is a poor man’s Tim Tebow and Rodgers is Aaron Rodgers little brother.

26. *Onterio McCalebb, Auburn
27. Latavuis Murray, Central Fla.
28. *Dennis Johnson, Arkansas
Tons of talent but also red flags here. Lattimore’s knee injury obviously, but Lacy is scaring me off big time, getting a LenDale White vibe from him – great stats, dominant power, but fat and lazy. Michael is a stud but has MAJOR attitude problems. Ellington is fantastic but maybe too skinny. Ball has as much mileage as any college RB in the past 30 years. “Dark horse” favorite of mine is Jefferson – the only thing he doesn’t have is great speed; just like Alfred Morris last year. Davis is a Darren McFadden clone. I don’t get the hype on Bernard or Gillislee.

28. Chad Bumphis, Mississippi St.
29. Zach Rogers, Tennessee
30. T.J. Moe, Missouri
Patterson has “it” – the “you can’t tackle me” mentality and moves to match; incredible with the ball in his hands, one of the best I’ve ever seen actually, but only 1 year of playing. Also with tantalizing talent and extreme rawness is his former teammate Hunter. Hopkins is ultra-competitive and has all pro potential. Austin is very overrated as I detail below. Swope and Boyce will shock a lot of people I think. Bailey is clutch. Robinson is a former QB but has to transition to play in the NFL; electric running skills and tough.

4. Matt Elam, Florida
T5. D.J. Swearinger, South Carolina
T5. Bacarri Rambo, Georgia
Will be drafted too high/busts:
QB Mike Glennon, North Carolina St. (total bust if drafted for anything but 3rd string developmental QB – 4th round at BEST – prediction: out of league in 4 years)
WR Tavon Austin, West Virginia (elite returner but very small, very low ypc, SLOT only – Wes Welker is best case – Percy Harvin comparisons are nonsense; Harvin is 5’11, 195 with Running Back legs, Austin is 5’8, 174. Certainly not worth a top 15 pick)
RB Giovani Bernard, North Carolina (Brian Westbrook clone physically but not nearly as fast/quick, not flashy at all – can’t believe he may be the 1st or 2nd RB drafted)
WR Markus Wheaton, Oregon St. (very slight frame, deep threat only – IE one trick pony in the mold of Bernard Berrian/Ashley Lielie/Todd Pinkston/etc)
Will be drafted too low/bargains:
WR Josh Boyce, TCU (elite strength/speed/routes, will be a better pro than college player)
RB Marcus Lattimore, South Carolina (if healthy, #1RB in draft – prototype in most areas)
TE Travis Kelce, Cincinnati (supper aggressive receiver with great speed for the position)
S Jordan Kovacs, Michigan (definition of “blue collar”, walk-on in college led Michigan in tackles; will at least be a special teams demon for years)
